Imphal: Manipur Congress leaders want Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh gone. They held a press conference at the Congress Bhavan on BT Road on August 28. General Secretary Soraisam Manaoton slammed the government for failing to protect lives and property. The opposition party plans to grill the administration when the Legislative Assembly session starts on September 2.
Manaoton pointed to a trail of blood to back his demands. Suspected Kuki militants killed four Liangmai Naga individuals along the IT Road on August 27, 2026. He warned the current regime is dead in the water. "There is absolutely no point in having a government if it cannot fulfil its primary duty of protecting innocent citizens and their properties," Manaoton said.
The state has seen recurring violence since Khemchand took power on February 4, 2026. This followed a period of President's Rule. The death toll includes two toddlers killed in Tronglaobi, several murdered Thadou leaders, and ten total Liangmai civilians killed across two separate attacks. Manaoton accused the government of bias, claiming they favor one community over others.
The Congress party says public trust is broken. They argue that law enforcement has failed to catch suspects or deliver justice. Khemchand took office promising peace in the outer districts. Instead, the Naga community and other neutral groups now face direct threats. The opposition intends to force a confrontation over these security lapses when the assembly reconvenes.
