Imphal: Manipur Congress leaders marched from Congress Bhawan to Lok Bhavan on Wednesday to protest the detention of Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi. The Delhi Police took Gandhi and other leaders into custody Tuesday following a demonstration near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence. The protest centered on demands for accountability regarding exam paper leaks and testing irregularities.
Led by former Chief Minister and MPCC President Okram Ibobi Singh, the delegation included CLP leader Keisham Meghachandra Singh and CWC member Gaikhangam. They submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. The document demands the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. It also calls for a parliamentary discussion on the leaks and the withdrawal of FIRs against students. Tension is high. The police crackdown sparked outrage.
During the initial Delhi protest, Minister of State Jitendra Singh and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan attempted to negotiate with leaders including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. The talks failed. Police then removed the protesters. Meghachandra Singh criticized the move on social media. "Rahul Gandhi is the voice of India’s youth, students, farmers, workers, and the marginalised," he wrote.
Ibobi Singh condemned the arrests as "undemocratic and unlawful" during a press briefing. He maintained that peaceful protest is a fundamental right. The party claims the central government is suppressing dissent. The MPCC also used the memorandum to demand urgent measures to address the specific concerns of the people of Manipur.
