Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh asked the Meitei community to act as a big brother to help settle the fighting between Kuki and Naga groups. He spoke at a BJP event in the state capital to mark Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. The date honors those who fought against the 1975 Emergency.
Peace is coming back. Khemchand noted that valley districts are stable again after months of unrest. In Jiribam, Hmar, Paite, Meitei, Kuki, and Naga people now live side by side. Displaced families have moved home to restart their lives.
The Chief Minister insisted that the state needs calm to grow. He pointed out that the end of President's Rule allowed the current administration to finish stalled public works. "Development cannot move forward without peace and normalcy," he said.
Khemchand sees big potential in Jiribam. He plans to turn the district into a major commercial hub with new projects backed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He did not share specific details yet.
The event also served to slam the old Congress government for its past authoritarian streak. BJP leaders honored activists who went to jail during the Emergency. Khemchand reminded the crowd that voters hold the ultimate power in a democracy.
