Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh took a shot at the Congress party on June 25. He blamed the party’s ongoing slump on the 1975 Emergency. The declaration of the Emergency remains a dark chapter for the nation. It shut down civil liberties for 21 months under Indira Gandhi.
Speaking at an event in Imphal, Singh honored Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. He argued that public support for the Congress is fading fast because voters remember the past. "During the Emergency, many individuals who opposed the Congress were jailed. The mistakes made by the Congress during that time are now well understood by the people, resulting in the party's declining public support," the Chief Minister said.
The state is shifting gears. Singh insists Manipur is finally moving toward normalcy. He pointed to Jiribam as a success story for current peace efforts. Officials held talks with Hmar, Meitei, Kuki, and Rongmei groups to fix rifts. Plans are in motion to send displaced people back home soon. A new, undisclosed development project will also start in Jiribam. The government remains focused on stabilizing the region.
