Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has called on the public to renew their dedication to the well-being and rights of senior citizens. Marking World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026, the Chief Minister emphasized that communities must shift from simple awareness to implementing tangible policy protections.

The global theme for this year, Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work, focuses on taking concrete steps to support older adults. Official estimates indicate that Manipur is home to approximately 3.3 lakh senior citizens, representing about 8.8 per cent of the state’s 37.5 lakh residents.

Elder abuse often involves physical, emotional, or financial exploitation, frequently carried out by people in positions of trust. The World Health Organization notes that these incidents are consistently underreported because victims often fear shame or feel dependent on their abusers. In a statement posted online, the Chief Minister urged the state to prioritize the safety of its older population, stating, "Let us work together to ensure that every older person lives with dignity, respect and security."

This annual observance is designed to help communities recognize warning signs of mistreatment. By promoting stronger community engagement, officials hope to foster a safer environment that honors the dignity of older residents.
