Longleng District Braces for Weeks of Isolation Following Cloudburst

Kohima: Longleng is effectively cut off. A recent cloudburst triggered widespread rockfalls, mudslides, and road subsidence across the district. Deputy Commissioner W. Manpai Phom issued a stern warning against all non-essential travel until the ground stabilizes. Roads are now death traps.

The District Disaster Management Authority held an emergency meeting on July 24 at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall. Officials confirmed that restoring critical road connectivity will take two to three weeks. In the interim, the district faces limited stocks of fuel and other essential commodities.

Extra Assistant Commissioner of Yachem, C. Tsalimse Sangtam, directed all heads of departments to verify damages to houses, property, and livestock in every village. These reports must follow the specific format required by the Home Department. Authorities established a District Emergency Control Room at the Deputy Commissioner's office to coordinate the response.

Officials have been ordered to use resources sparingly. "The district administration is closely monitoring the situation and is making efforts to restore normalcy at the earliest," the administration stated. Citizens must immediately report any road blockages, landslide incidents, or casualties to the nearest authority. Residents should avoid vulnerable areas during heavy rain and remain alert.
