Kohima: Residents of Longleng gathered at the Public Ground on June 6 to celebrate the 74th Phom Day, an annual observance marking the end of the Head-Hunting Era and the beginning of peace in Phom land. Deputy Commissioner W Manpai Phom attended as the special guest, unfurling the official flag to kick off the day of community reflection and unity.
The event was organized under the guidance of the Phom Day Commission and the Phom People's Council. During his address, W Manpai Phom urged the community to honor the vision of past leaders by maintaining harmony within and beyond the region. He emphasized that individual conduct remains the most significant factor in sustaining regional stability.
"We all have to self-examine ourselves and eradicate our selfish interest but work for the common cause for our tribe, for our village, and for the common welfare of the people," the Deputy Commissioner stated. He further noted that true progress relies on the collective cooperation of government officials, public leaders, and local functionaries.
The day included a variety of activities, such as a parade featuring students, scouts, and cadets from Yingli College. Attendees also witnessed the presentation of the NI Jamir Academic Excellence Awards, cultural performances, and the formal affirmation of the Phom Day Covenant by district officials. The celebration concluded with a series of sports matches and a volleyball exhibition.
