Itanagar: Monsoon rains sparked fresh landslides in Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday. The mudslides slammed into the West Kameng district. Road travel ground to a halt. The strategic Balipara-Charduar-Tawang highway took the worst of the impact.
Officials confirm no deaths in West Kameng so far. The Border Roads Organisation has crews on the ground. They are pushing tons of debris off the highway to reopen supply lines. Restoration will take time. Officials noted that continuous rainfall has saturated hill slopes, leading to mudslides and debris flows at several locations.
Statewide damage continues to pile up. Since June, floods and landslides have reached 94,000 residents across 26 districts. At least seven people have died in rain-related accidents. Others remain missing in places like Keyi Panyor and Anjaw.
The India Meteorological Department expects more trouble. They forecast heavy thunderstorms throughout the middle of the week. Chief Minister Pema Khandu toured the damage from the air. He ordered local agencies to speed up relief efforts. The state disaster management team is currently tracking the storm's path alongside federal partners.
Authorities urge residents to stay off dangerous roads. Watch for flash floods. Do not travel unless you have to.
