Gangtok: Torrential rain slammed West Sikkim overnight, dumping 95.2 mm of water on Gyalshing. The downpour triggered multiple landslides along the Gyalshing-Legship road. Mud and massive boulders smashed onto the pavement, effectively severing the district headquarters from the rest of the state. Traffic stopped dead.
District Magistrate Tenzing Denzongpa reported at least three slides along the corridor. The worst hit occurred near Omchung, just two kilometres from town. Crews moved excavators in overnight, but the mess remains difficult to clear. This route is the district's only lifeline, handling all emergency services, food, and daily commuters.
Locals say the road is a death trap every monsoon. Zilla Panchayat member Sagar Sharma noted, "landslides are a recurring monsoon hazard on this vital route." Authorities have yet to build any permanent fix for the crumbling road. Residents now wait for a path through the sludge, worrying about dwindling supplies and broken connections.
