Gangtok: Residents of Lachen in North Sikkim are demanding immediate action on damaged road infrastructure, warning of intensified protests if connectivity is not restored by July 15, 2026. The ultimatum follows nearly three years of isolation that has crippled tourism, delayed essential development projects, and hindered access to medical services and basic supplies.
During a recent public meeting, Lachen-Mangan MLA Samdup Lepcha met with frustrated locals to address their concerns. Lepcha stated that the Border Roads Organisation has committed to meeting the July deadline for repairs. While acknowledging the hardship faced by the community, the minister noted that the region's fragile terrain presents significant technical challenges for road construction and maintenance.
Lepcha emphasized that the state government is prioritizing the issue and intends to bring the matter before the Chief Minister. He also pointed to the national Vibrant Village initiative as a sign of the government's long-term commitment to developing these sensitive border areas. Despite this, residents expressed skepticism, noting that previous promises of improvement have failed to materialize into tangible results on the ground.
The minister highlighted that the area's strategic importance necessitates better planning to prevent future disruptions. He suggested that previous oversight in infrastructure management has contributed to the current crisis. Moving forward, the local government aims to balance the need for immediate repairs with the sustained support required to maintain connectivity in the remote Himalayan region.
