Kuki-Zo Women Hold Protest Demanding Justice and Hostage Release

Imphal: Hundreds of Kuki-Zo women held a peaceful protest in Manipur's Kangpokpi district on May 22 to demand accountability for the recent killing of three church leaders. The demonstration, organized by the Committee on Tribal Unity, centered on an ambush that occurred on May 13. Protesters condemned the attack as a barbaric act against religious figures who were widely respected for their humanitarian and spiritual work.

The participants expressed deep concern over the lack of security for their community amid ongoing ethnic unrest. They argued that the targeting of these individuals was an assault on their collective identity and faith. Many demonstrators became emotional as they called for the perpetrators to be identified and prosecuted immediately, warning that a lack of action could worsen public distrust.

In addition to justice for the slain leaders, the women demanded the safe release of fourteen Kuki-Zo civilians currently held in Senapati district. They described the situation as a major humanitarian crisis and urged authorities to ensure the hostages are returned home. The protesters stated that they would continue their peaceful agitation until these demands are met.

Beyond immediate concerns, the group called on the Indian government to prioritize a political resolution to the conflict. They argued that sustained violence has created a persistent security crisis for the Kuki-Zo people, urging officials to engage in dialogue to prevent further suffering.
