Imphal: The Working Committee of Kuki Civil Society Organisations has accused armed groups of launching a coordinated attack on Mongkot Chepu village in Manipur's Ukhrul district. The assault began around 10 pm on May 23, with gunfire reported from multiple locations including the Lilen Ridge area and sites near the Litan Police Station. The organization stated that the synchronized nature of the firing suggests the attack was premeditated.

Earlier that afternoon, worshippers returning from a service at Mongkot Chepu were also targeted. One resident, Ngamkhohen Khongsai, suffered an injury to his palm after being fired upon from the Lilen Ridge. The committee condemned these actions as deeply alarming and noted that they disrupted a week of relative calm in the region.

While the group credited the Bihar Regiment for a prompt response that prevented further violence, they urged the government to grant security forces a more decisive operational mandate. The committee argued that current limitations on security authority have left civilians vulnerable and stated that residents may need to pursue self-defense measures if protection remains inadequate.

Separately, the Kuki Students' Organisation has issued a directive for all village youth clubs in the Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. These units must install signs identifying their villages as part of the Kangpokpi district by June 1. The organization warned that units failing to meet this deadline could face internal disciplinary action.
