Imphal: Kuki civil society groups are calling for an independent investigation and increased security following the killing of 45-year-old farmer Haokhogin Lhouvum. Lhouvum was shot dead on June 9 while working in a paddy field near Lasan village in Manipur's Tamenglong district. His death occurred on the same day 14 Kuki hostages were released, casting a shadow over peace efforts in the region.

The Kuki Inpi Manipur, the apex body of Kuki tribes, criticized the state's security arrangements and cited administrative neglect of Kuki-Zo villages. The organization questioned why vulnerable areas remain exposed to violence despite previous requests for protection. They warned that recurring attacks are eroding trust between neighboring communities and undermining the prospect of long-term stability.

The Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust condemned the incident as a "cold-blooded" act against an unarmed civilian. They alleged that the killing was carried out by armed cadres of the NSCN-IM and the Zeliangrong United Front. The trust reported that at least eleven Kuki civilians have been killed since March in various hill districts, including Ukhrul, Kangpokpi, and Tamenglong, and is now urging the National Investigation Agency to lead a formal inquiry.

Other groups, including the Kuki Christian Leaders' Forum and the Kuki Students' Organisation, expressed deep concern over the timing of the attack. They noted that the killing took place shortly after high-level visits to review security in the region, which they argue highlights a failure of the state's security apparatus. Additionally, the Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills raised concerns over reports that the team transporting the victim's remains faced obstruction while traveling through Makui village.

Collectively, these organizations are demanding accountability for security failures and urgent intervention from both state and federal authorities. They argue that protecting civilians and ensuring equal justice are essential steps toward restoring peace in Manipur's conflict-affected hill areas.
