Imphal: The Kuki CSO Working Committee in Ukhrul has accused armed groups of launching a sustained four-hour attack on Mongkot Chepu village in Manipur. According to the organization, the assault began on the evening of May 26 at 6:48 pm and continued until 11:08 pm. The committee claims the attack originated from multiple directions, specifically from the area surrounding the Litan Sareikhong-Tangkhul Police Station and the Sikibung-Lilen Ridge.
Witnesses reported the use of mortars and other sophisticated weaponry during the incident. The committee characterized the event as a grave security failure, noting that this is not the first time Mongkot Chepu has been targeted. They argue that these recurring attacks against Kuki-Zo settlements in the fringe regions of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts represent a dangerous pattern of aggression.
In a formal statement addressed to state officials including the Chief Minister and the Director General of Police, the group criticized the government for failing to provide adequate protection. They argued that providing civilians with ballistic vests and helmets is an insufficient substitute for ensuring their fundamental right to life. The committee warned that the perceived silence from state and central authorities is eroding public confidence and fueling fear among residents.
The organization is now demanding immediate operational intervention to secure vulnerable settlements and prevent further violence. They stated that if the government cannot guarantee safety, it should be honest about the situation and facilitate alternative arrangements for the affected populations.
