Imphal: Kuki civil society organisations in Kangpokpi, Manipur, have declared an indefinite total shutdown starting midnight on June 10. The strike serves as a protest against the killing of Haogin Lhouvum, a Kuki-Zo farmer murdered at Lasan village in Tamenglong district on June 9. The shutdown will impact businesses, government offices, schools, and transportation across the entire district.

Leaders met at the Kangpokpi headquarters to address what they perceive as a worsening security situation for Kuki-Zo communities. Spokesperson Janghaolun Haokip stated that the latest incident highlights the ongoing danger faced by residents in remote regions. He noted, "The killing of Haogin Lhouvum at Lasan village underscored the vulnerability of civilians living in remote settlements."

The organisations report that eleven civilians, including three church leaders, have died in recent attacks they attribute to Tangkhul militant groups. They are calling for an immediate judicial inquiry and the deployment of security forces to vulnerable villages. Furthermore, the groups demand the arrest of the Makui village chief and associated authorities linked to the recent killing.

The victim's body remains at the district hospital morgue as families delay burial arrangements. Civil society members have vowed to intensify their protests until the government meets their demands for accountability and protection.
