Shillong: The East Jaintia Hills unit of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) is doubling down on its opposition to a proposed limestone mining project by Shree Cement Limited. This battle centers on Daistong village under Elaka Nongkhlieh. Residents fear the project will wipe out agricultural land, forests, and vital water sources.
KSU leaders met with George Hagi Chyrmang, the member secretary of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), on Tuesday. KSU president Streamley Suchen said the union remains fully committed to the farmers and landowners fighting the development. The union submitted evidence to the board proving the scale of public anger.
A public hearing is set for July 31. Tensions are high. The KSU questions why officials moved the start time from the usual 10 am to 8 am. Suchen stated, “We are surprised by the decision to hold the hearing at 8 am. While the MSPCB stated that the change was made following requests from local residents, many people remain apprehensive and are seeking clarity on the matter.”
This is not the first attempt to push the project through. The MSPCB canceled a hearing on May 22 at Lum Syrman after local protesters swarmed the site. The current plan covers 217 hectares of land. Local groups warn the total impact could reach 600 hectares. Residents worry that losing their land means losing their homes. They believe the cement company will keep the profits while the village keeps the damage. The KSU will determine its next move after the July 31 hearing concludes.
