Shillong: The Jaiñtia National Council wants answers. On Monday, the organization sent letters to the State Level Expert Appraisal Committee and the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority. They demand strict adherence to regulatory rules for the Shree Cement project at Lum Syrman. Government transparency is the goal.
JNC president Sambormi Lyngdoh told reporters the state must wait for its own fact-finding committee report before moving forward. The Council met with SEIAA chairman Annamalai to press for details. Annamalai confirmed the authority has taken no action on the project since the government announced the current freeze. He stated the department will not issue an Environmental Clearance while the status quo holds, noting that no final decision can occur until that process finishes.
Confusion remains high. The Council met with the Joint Secretary of the Chief Minister's Secretariat, who claimed the freeze only hits ground work, not paperwork. This contradicts the SEIAA chairman's stance. Lyngdoh addressed the discrepancy directly, noting: "The government should act transparently in dealing with the project and wait for the report of the fact-finding committee constituted by the state before taking any further steps."
The JNC is pushing for an official, written notification from the state government. They want clear instructions sent to all departments to end the conflicting reports. Residents of East Jaiñtia Hills deserve the truth. The Council insists that an official clarification for the Hynñiewtrep community is the only way to prevent regulatory violations.
