Shillong: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has formally requested the Union government to take a more active role in resolving the ongoing border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam. In a memorandum submitted to Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his regional visit, the organization asked federal authorities to expedite the second phase of negotiations currently managed by joint regional committees.

The student group highlighted the sensitivity of the remaining six disputed areas, noting that frequent tensions in these regions hinder local livelihoods and development projects. While acknowledging the Centre's role in settling the first phase of border discussions, the KSU alleged that actions from the Assam side have occasionally fueled unrest. The union insisted that all parties maintain peace, stating, "peace must be maintained until a final resolution is reached."

These calls come shortly after Meghalaya and Assam reached a localized agreement on June 3 to allow cultivation in parts of the Lapangap area, with final boundary demarcation pending further review. Beyond border concerns, the KSU pressed for the immediate implementation of the Inner Line Permit system in Meghalaya. The group argued that uncontrolled migration and population shifts following eviction drives in neighboring states threaten the demographic balance of the region.

The organization also renewed its long-standing advocacy for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, citing the need to protect the interests and heritage of indigenous tribal communities.
