Kangpokpi Observes Shutdown Following Killing of Manipur Villager

Imphal: A total shutdown brought daily life to a halt across Kangpokpi district on June 10 to mourn the death of Haokhogin Lhouvum. The villager, a resident of Lasan in Tamenglong district, was killed while working in his paddy field on June 9. Survivors reported that armed men opened fire on the group as they worked, leaving Lhouvum with fatal injuries while the others managed to flee.

His remains were transported to the Kangpokpi District Hospital under security escort in the early hours of Monday. Local teams assisting in the recovery encountered significant route obstacles, forcing them to navigate an alternative path to reach the district hospital. Various items recovered from the scene were turned over to the Tamei Police Station for evidence.

The Committee on Tribal Unity announced the district-wide strike to remain in effect until the victim is laid to rest. The closure impacted schools, offices, and local businesses, though the organization exempted essential services and transport. Representatives from the Kuki Inpi and other community groups gathered at the hospital to receive the body and express their outrage.

Kuki civil society organisations issued a formal condemnation of the violence and demanded an immediate investigation. Leaders stated, "Several Kuki organisations condemned the killing and called for a thorough investigation and action against those responsible." While local community members blamed armed militants for the attack, authorities have yet to confirm the identity of the perpetrators.
