Guwahati: The Ambubachi Mela began at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati on Monday night. This annual gathering started with the Pravritti ritual at 9:08 pm, marking the beginning of a four-day observance. Following centuries-old tradition, temple doors are now shut for three days to symbolize the yearly menstruation of Goddess Kamakhya, who is a revered symbol of fertility and feminine energy.
Authorities expect over eight lakh visitors to attend the festival. Thousands of saints, sadhus, and pilgrims have already reached the Nilachal Hills to participate. The temple will reopen on June 26 following the Nivritti rituals, allowing devotees to enter the shrine to receive the sacred Angodak and Angabastra.
State officials and temple management have implemented extensive security, healthcare, and sanitation measures to accommodate the massive crowds. Travel regulations are in effect around the temple to manage the influx of people. Private vehicles are restricted from the foothills, while dedicated bus services have been deployed to move pilgrims. Regarding the travel impact, officials stated, "Residents and travellers to expect traffic congestion in several parts of Guwahati between June 22 and June 26."
As one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the Kamakhya Temple remains a vital destination for spiritual seekers. Visitors travelling toward the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport are encouraged to plan their journeys well in advance to avoid potential delays during this period of high attendance.
