Imphal: Students at Padma Ratna English School in Kakching gathered Thursday to learn how to save the endangered Sangai deer. The Sangai First Foundation hosted the event to push for better wildlife protection. Principal Thokchom Jiten opened the session by stressing the need for environmental education. He wants young people to take charge of local conservation efforts.
K. Jugeshor, vice-president of the foundation, spoke about the constant threats facing the animals at Keibul Lamjao National Park. He told the crowd that the program exists for "promoting mass awareness among students for the long-term conservation of Manipur's state animal." The park stands as the world's only floating national park.
Surjit Kshetrimayum of ADAM launched a new project called One Teacher, One Plant to boost reforestation efforts. During the day, 113 students faced off in a spot quiz. The 28 winners will collect prizes at the 3rd Sangai Day Celebration this December. Dr. Kh. Shamungou also donated 13 books to the school library to help researchers.
The group planted a Uningthou sapling on campus to mark their commitment. Earlier, officials opened the Save Sangai Campaign Block at Angaan Ching Eco Park. This site serves as a permanent hub for public outreach. The day ended with students pledging to protect the habitat of the rare deer.
