Joujangtek villagers clear Old Cachar Road blockade after security deal

Imphal: Protesters cleared the Old Cachar Road today. The blockade finally ended after government officials met with representatives from Joujangtek village in Noney district. The road had been shut down since June 19 following an attack on farmers. Armed men fired on locals near the village, leaving resident Nohjang Haokip with bullet wounds to his arm and chest.

Security forces signed a pact to protect farmers at work. Authorities promised to keep essential supplies moving along the route, which links Jiribam to National Highway 37. Noney Superintendent of Police Divya Rajput led the negotiations alongside local police and administrative officials.

The memorandum sets strict boundaries. It states, "the agreement would become null and void if any future attack, threat or intimidation targeting the village or its residents occurs." Village leaders Henkhopad Haokip, Thongmang Haokip, and L. Robert signed the document on behalf of the community. The path is now open.
