Shillong: The Japan International Cooperation Agency is investing ₹1,592 crore into infrastructure development across Meghalaya. These highway projects aim to improve regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth throughout Northeast India.

The funding supports the Northeast Road Network Connectivity Improvement Programme, which covers three specific corridors. These include the Shillong to Dawki Road, the Dhubri to Phulbari Bridge stretch, and the route from Selsella Simbukolgre to Goeragre on NH-127B. Officials expect these developments to simplify trade and foster cross-border commerce with neighboring Bangladesh.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari recently emphasized that these corridors are vital for connecting the Northeast to broader international trade routes. Regarding the impact of the initiative, the agency stated that the projects are expected to "boost trade, facilitate cross-border commerce with Bangladesh, and generate new economic opportunities for the region." This investment reflects a broader commitment by the agency to support sustainable development and infrastructure growth within the Indian border states.
