Guwahati: Health authorities in Assam’s Barpeta district have confirmed four cases of Japanese Encephalitis, resulting in two fatalities. The victims were 59-year-old Subhash Chandra Baishya from Gorar Tari and 20-year-old Zahidul Islam from Pakabetbari village. Medical teams are also monitoring 18 additional patients currently exhibiting symptoms consistent with the illness.
Barpeta District Malaria Officer Jyotirupa Das confirmed the status of the outbreak, stating that "four cases of Japanese Encephalitis have been confirmed in the district till date." Beyond these specific infections, the region has recorded 10 dengue cases and four malaria cases since the start of the year.
To stop the transmission of the virus, the Health Department has launched a broad series of vector-control activities. These efforts include insecticide treatments for mosquito nets, scheduled fogging operations, and the introduction of larvivorous fish into local stagnant water sources. Officials are also conducting rapid screenings and blood tests for residents reporting fever.
The department is calling on the public to stay alert as monsoon conditions continue to elevate the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. Residents have been urged to seek prompt medical care if they experience severe headaches, vomiting, or persistent fevers and to work closely with local health workers during ongoing prevention campaigns.
