Shillong: Meghalaya Assembly legislators ordered a site change for the dead Pohkseh Water Supply Scheme on Wednesday. The existing pumping station failed years ago, halting the project entirely. The Estimate Committee, led by Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, visited the site with fellow members Miani D Shira, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, and Remington G Momin.
Syiem called the failure unfortunate. He said, "The Committee had instructed the department to identify a new location so that the scheme could be revived." The team also thanked the local Dorbar Shnong for providing land for the original work. Officials now expect the Public Health Engineering Department to draft revised estimates quickly to get water to local homes.
The Committee found better news at the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme in Mawpdang. The first phase, including a dam and treatment plant, should wrap up by December 2027. Workers will start the second phase, covering the distribution network, immediately after. Leaders expressed confidence that the project will hit its deadline.
Inspectors also toured the 2nd IT Park Building at the Shillong Technology Campus. Despite some implementation hurdles, the team reported solid progress. Syiem believes this site will create jobs and boost the state tech sector. The Committee intends to keep monitoring all state projects to prevent further waste.
