Shillong: The Meghalaya Assembly Estimates Committee ordered the Public Health Engineering Department to find a new location for the dormant Pohkseh Water Supply Scheme. A pumping system collapse years ago killed the project at its current site. Committee chairman and Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem pushed for immediate action. He wants the department to draft revised project estimates as soon as possible.
Committee members Miani D Shira, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, and Remington G Momin joined the Wednesday inspection. They walked the site with officials from the Assembly Secretariat and the PHE and IT departments. The group acknowledged the Dorbar Shnong of Pohkseh for donating the land. Syiem stated: "Once the new site is finalised, work can begin to provide safe drinking water to households in the locality."
The Committee also checked the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme at Mawpdang. Construction looks good. The first phase includes a dam, main gravity line, and treatment plant. Officials expect commissioning by December 2027. A second phase will follow to lay pipes for local water distribution.
The team wrapped up at the 2nd IT Park Building inside the Shillong Technology Campus. Work continues despite hurdles. Syiem expects the park to create jobs for local youth and grow the state's tech sector. The committee promised to keep watching these projects to ensure they finish on time.
