Shillong: The Meghalaya Cabinet approved the Electric Vehicle Policy 2026 on July 27. Officials want more EVs on the road. The state will grant a Rs 25,000 incentive to every buyer, while also waiving all registration fees. Cabinet Minister Marcuise N. Marak said, "The Cabinet has approved the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle Policy 2026. To encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, every buyer will receive an incentive of Rs 25,000. Registration fees for electric vehicles will also be fully waived."
Buyers presenting a vehicle scrapping certificate from last year's state policy will receive additional, yet-to-be-defined incentives. Marak addressed infrastructure gaps, noting that the government has identified locations for new charging stations. Plans for a dedicated state-run vehicle scrapping facility are also in motion.
The Cabinet shifted its focus to power grid expansion. They sanctioned Rs 22.37 crore to compensate landowners along a 6.5-km corridor. This land is required for a 132 KV transmission line connecting the existing 220/132 KV Secondary Sub-Station to the new 132/33 KV, 2x50 MVA Mawkhanu Sub-Station. This payment covers necessary Right of Way costs.
Urban planning also saw a shake-up. The New Shillong Township Development Agency will become the New Shillong Development Authority, or NSDA, through amendments to the 2012 rules. This change gives the new body more power to manage city expansion and governance. Finally, the state extended the contract of B.M. War. He will continue his service as the Chief Technical Advisor for Generation at the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited.
