Guwahati: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is expected to stay in New Delhi for her upcoming India visit. Logistics are messy. The planned summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Guwahati now faces major hurdles and will likely be scrapped. The visit is set for July 1 to 3.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma previously hyped the meeting as a chance to host top leaders in the Northeast. That plan is stalling. Takaichi faces a tight schedule due to domestic commitments in Japan, making travel outside the national capital difficult. Officials want a streamlined program to focus on bilateral goals.
Reports previously suggested Takaichi would bring 50 business executives from companies like Suzuki Motor, Toyota Tsusho, and Itochu. The summit aims to tackle trade, economic security, and supply-chain resilience. Both nations will review their long-term strategic partnership and regional developments. As noted by sources, the trip will be her "first official visit to India" since taking office.
The shift echoes 2019, when former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe postponed an Assam visit during local protests. Neither government has confirmed the final itinerary. The move to New Delhi remains the most probable outcome to ensure the summit stays on track.
