Shillong: National People’s Party leader James P.K. Sangma has been officially elected to the Rajya Sabha from Meghalaya. He secured the seat unopposed after the deadline for withdrawing nominations passed on Thursday, leaving him as the sole candidate for the state's lone vacancy.

Returning Officer and Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretary Malthus Sangma formally declared the victory and presented the certificate of election. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma congratulated his colleague on social media, noting that the unanimous decision reflects the ruling coalition's firm belief in his ability to serve as the voice of Meghalaya.

Addressing his new role, Sangma expressed that he was "deeply humbled and honoured" to represent the state in the Upper House. He steps into the position as Dr. Wanweiroy Kharlukhi completes his six-year term later this month.

Sangma outlined an ambitious agenda for his upcoming tenure, identifying the implementation of the Inner Line Permit and the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution as top priorities. He emphasized that he views these goals as a mandate from the state legislature. "As a representative of the state, it is my bounden duty to ensure that the resolutions passed by the Assembly find a strong voice in Parliament," he said.

Beyond legislative advocacy, the former state minister plans to pursue better border infrastructure and enhanced trade relations with Bangladesh. He also intends to work closely with central ministries to improve the delivery of development projects across Meghalaya and the broader Northeast region.
