Shillong: National People’s Party leader James P.K. Sangma has been officially elected to the Rajya Sabha after running unopposed. He received his election certificate on Thursday from the Returning Officer and pledged to serve as a dedicated advocate for Meghalaya and the broader Northeast region in Parliament.
Sangma acknowledged the difficulties northeastern states often face when attempting to secure adequate speaking time in the Upper House. He committed to persistently pushing for more opportunities to raise regional concerns. "I feel deeply humbled by the responsibility of representing the state in the Upper House," Sangma told reporters after his certification.
Among his primary objectives, Sangma intends to advocate for the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. He also plans to champion the implementation of the Inner Line Permit in Meghalaya, noting that he will ensure the resolution previously passed by the State Assembly gains traction at the central level. Beyond policy advocacy, he plans to collaborate with central ministries to improve the delivery of government schemes to the state.
Sangma also addressed recent speculation regarding internal tension within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance over his nomination. He maintained that the coalition remained united, describing the selection process as a healthy democratic consultation that resulted in a clear consensus. He emphasized that the welfare of the state should remain above partisan politics and expressed optimism about working alongside fellow representatives to advance the interests of Meghalaya.
