India Targets Strong Opening Against Pakistan in T20 World Cup Opener

Shillong: India enters the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup this Sunday with a mission to secure a win against rivals Pakistan in Birmingham. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, the team aims to build on their recent 50-over world title with a dominant performance in the shorter format. Historically, India holds a strong record against Pakistan, maintaining a 13-3 head-to-head lead and a recent victory during the 2024 tournament in Dubai.

To succeed, India needs a revitalized effort from openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma. Both players have struggled to find consistency in recent series, making a strong start essential against a competitive Pakistan side. The Indian middle order, featuring captain Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh, and Bharti Fulmali, will provide additional depth to combat Pakistan's bowling attack, which includes the frugal left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu.

Pakistan’s strategy centers on skipper Fatima Sana, who has demonstrated elite form as both a batter and a bowler over the past year. Despite a brief injury scare during Saturday's training session when she was struck on the shin by a ball, Sana has been cleared to play. Regarding the incident, she told reporters, "It was just a normal shot from Ayesha and I was hit below knee. But I think it is good now."

India’s bowling unit faces a challenge as it navigates the tournament without injured players Amanjot Kaur and Kashvee Gautam. All-rounder Deepti Sharma will remain a key figure in India’s efforts to control the game. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 pm IST.
