Guwahati: India is pushing the BRICS bloc to set up a dedicated virtual working group to combat global narcotics trafficking. Narcotics Control Bureau Director General Anurag Garg floated the plan Monday in Guwahati during a two-day gathering of anti-drug agencies.

Drug syndicates use advanced tech and slick smuggling methods to bypass borders. Garg argued that old methods cannot stop these new threats. He noted that the drug trade is now a major security headache, stating, "the changing nature of the drug trade has transformed what was once a largely local issue into a global security challenge."

The proposed group would force regular meetings, real-time data sharing, and tighter enforcement. India also wants to standardize training for frontline officers across all member states. Officials at the summit are focused on stopping the flow of synthetic drugs and tracking illegal precursor chemicals.

BRICS recently added new members including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia. The bloc now covers 11 countries, nearly half the global population, and a massive chunk of international trade. Leaders hope this expanded reach will turn the tide on the illicit drug supply.
