Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma honored Mangal Pandey on Sunday, July 19. They marked the birth anniversary of the revolutionary who challenged British colonial rule. Pandey served as a sepoy in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry of the East India Company. He sparked the 1857 revolt. On March 29, 1857, Pandey attacked British officers at Barrackpore.
Pandey faced arrest shortly after the incident. British authorities executed him by hanging on April 8, 1857. He died at age 29. Prime Minister Modi stated the revolutionary laid down his life to uphold the pride and honor of the motherland. He added that Pandey's courage and sacrifice inspire current generations.
Chief Minister Sarma labeled Pandey an immortal martyr and the pioneer of the 1857 Revolution. He shared a message on X. "On the birth anniversary of Mangal Pandey ji, the pioneer of the 1857 Revolution and the immortal heroic martyr, we offer him millions of salutations," Sarma wrote. The government officials remembered his role as a symbol of early Indian resistance.
