Imphal: Members of the Imagi Meira Organisation stormed the Manipur Legislative Assembly on July 31. They locked the main gate at 1 pm. Protesters staged a sit-in to vent their anger over the government ignoring a memorandum previously sent to the chief minister.
The group demands an immediate special Assembly session to debate peace measures. President Th. Sujata insists the House is the only proper platform to resolve issues for conflict-hit communities. She claims the violence has dragged on for three years and now threatens the Naga community as well.
"People are frustrated with the government's handling of the situation, and every community is yearning for peace. The Assembly is the right platform to discuss solutions instead of merely conducting outreach visits and offering assurances to communities," Sujata said.
The organization set a five-day deadline for state action. Demands include new laws for peace, protection for villages, legal cover for local volunteers, and swift justice for victims. Security personnel intervened to cut the locks and restore access to the building. Sujata warned that Meira Paibis and local clubs will spark a massive statewide agitation if the government misses the five-day window.
