Guwahati: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has earned a spot among India’s top ten institutions in the latest QS World University Rankings 2027. Reaching a global rank of 349, the institute continues to bolster its reputation as a leading center for research and academic excellence. This placement highlights the growing international standing of the university, which remains the highest-ranked institution in the Northeast region.

IIT Delhi leads the national cohort at 118 globally, followed by IIT Bombay at 134 and IIT Madras at 170. Other high-performing institutions include IIT Kharagpur, IISc Bengaluru, IIT Kanpur, the University of Delhi, and IIT Roorkee. Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences also secured a position within the top ten in India with a global rank of 452.

The rankings measure institutions on academic reputation, research impact, faculty quality, and international collaboration. Education experts believe the steady climb of schools like IIT Guwahati shows that the nation is becoming more competitive on the global stage. However, analysts suggest that more investment is required to break into the top tier. As the report states, "greater investment in research infrastructure, faculty development and internationalisation will be crucial for more Indian universities to enter the top 100 in the coming years."

Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology maintained its position as the top university for the 15th year in a row. Imperial College London and Stanford University tied for second place, followed by top institutions from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Asia.
