Shillong: IIM Shillong honored former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Monday. The institute marked his 11th death anniversary by installing an eight-foot-tall bronze statue on campus. It stands 3.25 feet wide and 3.5 feet deep. Shishir Kumar Bajoria, Chairman of the Board of Governors, pulled the veil on the figure.
The statue commemorates Dr. Kalam’s ties to the institute. He collapsed at IIM Shillong on July 27, 2015, while delivering his final lecture. That speech, titled "How to Make Our Planet More Liveable," focused on environmental consciousness and ethical leadership. The institute noted that the speech remains a core philosophy for its mission.
"The message he shared during his final interaction with students continues to serve as a guiding philosophy for future generations to dream with purpose, lead with integrity and work towards a more sustainable, peaceful and inclusive world," the school stated. The ceremony featured BoG members Atul Kulkarni and Nitin Sharma.
Director Prof. Arun Mohan Sherry attended alongside Col. Dinesh Adhikari, staff, and students. Known fondly as Kalam Sir, the late leader remains a beacon for the student body. The institute says it will keep pushing his vision for innovation and management education.
