Imphal: The process of identifying six bodies recovered by security forces began Thursday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences mortuary in Imphal. These individuals were Naga civilians who had been missing since their reported abduction from Leilon Vaiphei village in the Kangpokpi district on May 13.
Security forces discovered the remains during a search operation and transported them to the hospital early Thursday morning. IGP Zone III Ningshen Worngam confirmed the recovery followed an extensive search effort. He stated, "The case has been handed to NIA and an investigation into the incident has already begun."
The arrival of the bodies at the hospital triggered localized unrest Wednesday night as crowds gathered near the mortuary. Police deployed tear gas to disperse the assembly and restore order. Authorities have since increased security measures at the site to maintain stability during the ongoing identification and investigation processes.
Multiple organizations have called for a comprehensive inquiry into the deaths and swift accountability for those involved. As the National Investigation Agency leads the probe, families continue to work with medical examiners to formally identify their relatives.
