Imphal: The Taphou Kuki Village Authority has publicly thanked the diverse coalition of leaders and organizations that secured the safe release of 14 Kuki detainees. The individuals, all residents of Taphou Kuki Village, returned home on June 9 after being held in captivity since May 13.
Families of the captives had maintained a peaceful sit-in protest for nearly a month to demand their unconditional release. Following their return, the village authority credited the successful outcome to a broad collaborative effort involving political representatives, civil society groups, security forces, and church leaders from both the Naga and Kuki communities.
The village authority specifically recognized the intervention of Manipur’s Chief Minister, state cabinet ministers, and legislators from the Saitu and Saikul constituencies. They also acknowledged the mediation efforts provided by groups such as the United Naga Council, the Naga People's Organisation, and Kuki Inpi Manipur, alongside various local student associations.
Security forces, including the 16 Assam Rifles and the CRPF, were praised for their role in coordinating the safe return of the residents. Reflecting on the event, the authority emphasized the power of community cooperation. The group stated that the release highlighted the importance of "cooperation and dialogue among communities" while urging all stakeholders to prioritize peace-building and the protection of civilian lives moving forward.
