Guwahati: Hundreds of residents and students gathered for a candlelight rally in Dholmara on May 29 to demand justice for two schoolgirls whose deaths remain shrouded in mystery. Organised by the All Assam Adivasi Students Association, the protest called for a high-level, impartial investigation into the deaths of Anamika Bara and Sarita Lakra.
The two girls were found dead in a local pond on May 21. While authorities suggested drowning, family members and community leaders have rejected this explanation, insisting that the circumstances surrounding the incident are suspicious. Protesters expressed deep grief and frustration as they marched, urging officials to uncover the truth and hold anyone responsible for potential foul play accountable.
AASA president Gudwin Hembrom stated that the organisation will continue its demonstrations until the families receive justice. The Assam government has pledged financial support of Rs 2 lakh to each of the families of the deceased as the community awaits further developments in the inquiry.
