Guwahati: Hindi will officially enter the Assam Legislative Assembly during the upcoming Budget session. Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass confirmed the addition on July 5, following a General Purpose Committee meeting. Hindi joins Assamese, English, and Bodo as an official language for House proceedings. It is a major change.

Dass said, "It was decided that along with Assamese, English and Bodo, Hindi will be introduced henceforth in the Assembly." The Speaker explained the move as a mark of respect for the Rashtra Bhasha. He also noted it helps members who feel more comfortable speaking Hindi.

The announcement sparked immediate fear that Bodo might get cut. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma moved fast to kill those rumors. He posted on X that there is no plan to pull Bodo from official business. Bodo is protected under the Constitution and the Assam Official Language Act.

The Assembly channel, ALA TV, is also getting a new name. It will become Assam Bidhan Sabha TV. The state hopes to model the channel after Lok Sabha TV to boost transparency. The Budget session starts Monday and runs through July 31.
