Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 10, highlighting a significant shift in the state’s development under his leadership. In a public letter, Sarma noted that the Prime Minister has played a pivotal role in transitioning Assam from a dependent region into a vital contributor to the national economy.

Sarma stated, "His leadership has realigned Assam's development trajectory from being a dependent state to a contributory state in India's growth story." According to the Chief Minister, Modi effectively moved the Northeast from the national periphery to the center of development, referring to the region as an "Ashtalakshmi" and a new engine for economic growth.

The Chief Minister pointed to Modi's frequent engagement, noting 36 visits to the state, which he argued helped Assam feel more connected to the national mainstream. These visits included cultural participation, such as celebrating Bihu and promoting the legacy of Lachit Barphukan. He also credited the administration for global recognition, including the UNESCO World Heritage status for Charaideo Moidams and granting classical language status to Assamese.

Infrastructure remains a core focus of this transformation. Sarma cited major investments like the Tata semiconductor facility at Jagiroad, the Assam Bio-Refinery, and the expansion of the Numaligarh Refinery. Future connectivity projects, such as the Jorhat-Majuli Bridge and the Brahmaputra tunnel, were also highlighted as transformative.

Beyond physical development, Sarma praised the government for advancing regional peace and enhancing healthcare access through AIIMS Guwahati. Concluding his message, he noted that the Prime Minister’s legacy goes beyond economics, stating, "You gave Assam visibility. You gave Assam confidence. You gave Assam dignity. Most importantly, you gave Assam a profound sense of belonging."
