Guwahati: Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the legal case surrounding the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, has appointed advocate Gaurab Chakraborty to serve as his new legal counsel. Chakraborty will handle Mahanta's representation during upcoming court proceedings.

This change in legal strategy follows the Gauhati High Court's decision on May 29 to reject Mahanta's bail plea. The case stems from the passing of Zubeen Garg, who died in Singapore on September 19, 2025.

While Mahanta secures new representation, the Fast Track Court is moving forward with other aspects of the investigation. The court has concluded hearings for four additional individuals accused in the case. After listening to arguments from both the prosecution and the defence, the judge has "reserved its order on their pleas." Legal observers expect further updates as the court prepares to issue rulings on these pending applications.
