Guwahati: A brutal heatwave sent 21 schoolgirls to the hospital in Dhubri, Assam. The students fell ill on Friday evening at a residential hostel in Golakganj. They faced severe physical distress around 7:30 p.m.
Hostel staff rushed the group to the Golakganj Primary Health Centre. Doctors later moved them to the Dhubri Medical College and Hospital for specialized care. The students were in rough shape at first. Officials monitored them through the night.
Jyoti Kumar Das, the Joint Director of Health Services, pointed to the weather. "All the students were in visible distress. We assume that these difficulties may have occurred due to heat stroke-like symptoms brought on by the excessively hot weather," Das said.
Tests ruled out food poisoning. There were no signs of a broader health outbreak at the facility. Most of the girls recovered quickly. Medical teams discharged them on Saturday morning after a final evaluation. Local officials now plan to audit hostel ventilation and living conditions to stop this from happening again.
