Police Officer Killed by Wild Elephant in Assam

Guwahati: A wild elephant killed an Assam police officer in the Goalpara district overnight. Amzad Ali, a member of the 17th Assam Police Battalion at Dakurvita, died following a violent encounter with a lone tusker.

Ali was heading back to his duty post when the elephant intercepted him. The animal grabbed Ali with its trunk and trampled him. The attack left the officer in critical condition.

Rescuers rushed Ali to a nearby hospital, but he was already dead. Doctors declared him deceased upon arrival. "The incident has once again highlighted the continuing threat posed by human-elephant conflict in Goalpara, where encounters between wild elephants and local residents have repeatedly resulted in casualties."

Officials from the Forest Department have yet to release details on how they plan to handle the recurring danger. The region remains on edge as lethal run-ins between humans and wildlife continue to plague the area.
