Guwahati: Guwahati residents have waited over a decade for reliable water. The Assam government told the State Assembly on July 9 that stalled projects backed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency will finally finish by December 2026. These efforts began in 2012.

Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai confirmed the South-Central Guwahati project is 96.75 per cent done. The North Guwahati project sits at 95.75 per cent. Both were meant to finish years ago. Construction started in March 2012. These projects burned through Rs 1,450.87 crore so far. The state used the last of the JICA loan funds in December 2024.

The South-Central project currently serves 83,569 households. The North Guwahati project will eventually reach 15,000 homes. The South-West Guwahati project started in October 2023. It sits at 72 per cent completion. It should be ready by mid-2027.

Officials also updated the status of the South-East Guwahati project. Work restarted in March 2026 with NDB funding. It aims for a May 2029 finish. Minister Rai noted the scale of the task ahead. "Surveys estimate that Guwahati requires water connections for nearly 2.21 lakh households," the minister stated.

The city remains under construction. Separate schemes run by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation continue to supply roughly 21,000 consumers. Work also persists on a massive sewerage project. The government provided extensive documentation on these efforts to the House.
