Guwahati: Guwahati police are taking the wheel. The Deputy Commissioner of Police for traffic issued strict new rules for Green Bus operators to curb a recent surge in accidents. The crackdown follows a string of crashes, including one in Fancy Bazar that left two people dead. Another rider ended up in the hospital after a bus swerved into oncoming traffic.

Drivers must now stick to the left lane. Overtaking is off the table. The Kamrup Metropolitan district administration already pulled the plug on 63 driver licences as punishment for repeated traffic violations. Any bus caught breaking these rules will sit in an impound lot for seven days.

Accountability is the main goal. Every driver now has to display their licence on the front windshield for all to see. Officials said the new measures are aimed at improving traffic discipline among Green Bus drivers and preventing accidents caused by reckless driving, improper lane usage and violation of road safety rules. The city is done playing nice. Police promised to keep the pressure on until the roads get safer for everyone.
