Guwahati traffic constable suspended following bribery allegations

Guwahati: Guwahati police have suspended traffic constable Rekibul Ali after he was caught allegedly accepting a bribe beneath the Ganeshguri flyover. The incident occurred when Ali stopped a white Scorpio driven by Rajesh Deka for several traffic violations, including the use of black-tinted windows and an unauthorized flag stand.

Instead of issuing a formal fine, which would have amounted to approximately 7,500 rupees under the Motor Vehicles Act, Ali reportedly demanded a cash payment of 2,500 rupees. The transaction drew the attention of nearby bystanders, leading to an public uproar. Officers from the Dispur Police Station arrived at the scene and recovered the cash from the constable, who was subsequently placed under reserve and suspended.

Deputy Commissioner of Police for Traffic, Jayanta Sarathi Bora, emphasized that Guwahati traffic officers are strictly prohibited from handling cash payments. He stated, "Rekibul Ali has been suspended with immediate effect and departmental proceedings will be initiated against him. Guwahati Traffic Police never collect fines in cash."

Bora confirmed that the department is now reviewing CCTV footage to verify the original traffic violations. The force currently utilizes a digital system where offenders receive an SMS notification to pay fines through official banking channels. Authorities are urging the public to refuse any requests for cash payments from police personnel and to report such encounters immediately.
