Guwahati: Guwahati Municipal Corporation launched a crackdown on filth today. The city is rolling out a strict schedule of spot fines to stop littering and public health hazards. Officials want cleaner streets.
People caught spitting in public will owe 300 rupees. Littering, public urination, and open defecation carry a 500 rupee penalty. That same fee applies to anyone caught using banned plastic carry bags or other prohibited single-use items.
The corporation is hitting illegal dumpers hard. Improper disposal of construction debris or sewage costs 2,000 rupees, while dumping chemical waste spikes the fine to 5,000 rupees. Vandalizing public infrastructure like bridges or electric poles also draws a 5,000 rupee charge.
The steepest penalty targets those who clog the city drainage network. Anyone caught blocking natural water flow by dumping materials must pay 25,000 rupees. The corporation says these rules exist to force compliance and protect public property.
In a direct appeal to residents, the GMC stated, "Follow the rules. Respect public spaces. Help make Guwahati cleaner every day."
