Guwahati: Guwahati saw a significant spike in traffic rule violations throughout May, according to data released by the local traffic police on Friday. The most alarming trend involved drunk driving, which jumped from 41 cases in April to 396 in May. Authorities identified impaired driving as a primary contributor to severe road accidents and fatalities across the city.
Other traffic offenses saw similar increases. Wrong-side driving rose to 963 incidents, up from 526 the previous month. Helmetless riding remained a major issue with 12,000 recorded violations, while cases of triple riding climbed to 130 and mobile phone usage while driving reached 31 incidents.
Deputy Commissioner of Police for Traffic, Jayanta Sarathi Borah, noted that enforcement efforts aim to improve safety rather than just collect revenue. He stated, "The objective of traffic enforcement is not merely to collect fines but to create awareness among motorists and ensure road safety."
In response to these trends, police have ramped up enforcement, leading to 223 seized driving licenses in May compared to just 20 in April. This crackdown also resulted in higher penalty collections, with e-challan revenue rising to Rs 3.01 crore from Rs 2.30 crore in April. Officials are now warning that repeated offenders face license cancellations to encourage more responsible behavior on the road.
