Shillong: The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs is collaborating with the Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission to weave the National Service Scheme into the academic curriculum. This move aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and aims to resolve ongoing conflicts between service activities and class schedules.
Union Secretary for Youth Affairs, Dr. Pallavi Jain Govil, announced the development of a new framework during a consultation meeting held at St. Anthony’s College in Shillong. The session, hosted by the NSS State Cell Meghalaya and the Regional Directorate of NSS, gathered administrators to discuss the future of the program across the Northeast.
To modernize the scheme, the Ministry is pushing for volunteers to join the My Bharat platform for easier access to national initiatives. Officials also plan to launch an NSS Alumni Page to keep former volunteers involved in the network. Regarding operations, Dr. Govil confirmed that funding will now flow directly to individual units to eliminate administrative delays. However, full and timely disbursement will remain contingent upon accurate data reporting through the official NSS portal.
The Ministry is also prioritizing internal recognition to boost morale. Dr. Govil encouraged the documentation of effective local practices and proposed new incentives, such as awards and promotions, to reward dedicated volunteers and Programme Officers.
